Resetting Your Crystals

Resetting Your Crystals

It’s funny how things come together. A few years ago I decided I’d like a Tibetan Singing Bowl. Then, when I was visiting London with my daughter, we came across a market stall with so many singing bowls I was spoilt for choice. We spent a long time listening to a wide range of notes until I found one that I really liked and my daughter bought it for me as a gift.

Fast forward a few years, and I have been reading a lot about clearing, or resetting, crystals using sound, which may be from your own voice - or a Singing Bowl!

In a previous post So What’s With Crystal Energy? I talked about the energy vibrations of crystals, and how everything vibrates with its own frequency. When you use or wear crystals, and particularly if you use them in any form of healing, the natural frequency of the stones can shift as the stones begin to resonate with the surrounding energies. This is a bit like a radio that is just out of tune. You can’t hear a clear sound as the sound is fuzzy and not distinct. It’s the same with crystals – when they don’t resonate at their natural frequency, their properties are dulled and fuzzy.

So what to do about it?

Given time, crystals will reset themselves to their natural frequency, but if you want to help them along, then acoustics is a quick method to use. Use a tuning fork, a singing bowl, Tibetan bells, your voice, or an instrument – anything that provides a strong resonance.

I’m sure you’ve heard the tale about opera singers shattering glass with their high notes (Mythbusters showed it’s possible but unlikely due to many factors), and you’ve probably felt the effect of sound on yourself or your windows. Think how you feel if a car pulls up next to you with speakers blaring. Depending on the sound, you can actually feel the sound as the vibration resonates with your body! Or if you’re in the house, you may be aware of your windows shaking!

This is the exact mechanism that can be used to reset crystals.

You can find sound tracks on YouTube that you can use – and some people have reported success by turning up the volume on their music. I feel that this method is passive, and I think you get better results by actively working with the sound and adding your power of intention to the cleansing.

How else can I clean/reset my crystals?

With many of the other ways of cleansing and clearing crystals, you need to have some knowledge of the crystal so the method you use doesn’t damage the crystal. To recap some of the other methods:

Salt
You can immerse crystals in salt water, rub salt on individual crystals, or bury the crystals in salt. Salt cleansing is probably one of the better-known methods, but there are drawbacks. Salt can damage softer crystals (crystals with a MOH hardness of less than 7), such as Fluorite and Malachite, and some crystals should not be immersed in water – for example anything that is cracked, or any crystal that will absorb water, such as Halite and Selenite. If you use this method, throw out the used salt when you have finished.

Smudging
This is burning herbs to create smoke that cleanses the air. Sage is often used, but you can also burn incense, or cedar, juniper, and sweet grass, amongst others. Pass your crystals through the smoke to cleanse them. For more information, see Smudging - A Modern Approach.

Sunlight
Place crystals in sunlight for a few hours. This is a great method for sun-loving crystals, such as Carnelian and Sunstone, but there are some crystals that will fade in the sun – such as Amethyst, Aquamarine, Citrine, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, and Turquoise. If in doubt, use a different method.

Moonlight
One of my favorite methods. I don’t know if it works any better than sound, but I just love the romance and mystery of using moonlight. This method works when there is a full moon, or one day on either side of it. It doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy or overcast, but take care if rain is forecast, and don’t use crystals that may absorb water.

Earth
You can bury your crystals in the earth (or in a pot of earth). This allows the crystal to reset from earth’s energy, but is messy. Don’t use this method with soft crystals or crystals that may absorb moisture from the soil. Also, be careful if your crystal has any carvings that would make it difficult to clean.

There are other ways you can investigate, such as using Reiki, brown rice, or using other crystals for cleansing. Whichever method you use, do what you feel is right for you and your crystals. If you have a favorite way that works – don’t stop. It’s just good to have a few alternatives to select from.

How often should I reset my crystals?

It’s a good idea to reset your crystals when you first receive them. You don’t know who has handled them, or where they have been, so this gives you and your crystals a clean slate to work with. Other than that, it really depends how often you wear or use your crystals and for what purpose.

If you are working in emotionally charged environments, you should cleanse your crystals after each encounter, for example after each client. If you keep crystals on your desk, surrounded by the EMF from computers, you should reset at least weekly. Similarly, if you are wearing a bracelet on a daily basis, it would help to cleanse it weekly. However, if you have crystals that you keep in a drawer and rarely use, you may never need to cleanse them – or maybe just when you take them out to use them again.
