Mined mainly in Afghanistan, Chile, and Russia, Lapis Lazuli (often just known as Lapis) has been one of the most sought after stones in history. The ancient Egyptians used Lapis Lazuli in scarabs, beads, and pendants, and ground it into powder to use as medicine, dyes, and eye shadow!! The Pharoahs considered it a stone of royalty, and used it to decorate the sarcophagus of King Tutankhamen.
During the middle ages in Europe, Lapis was ground to a powder and used as the ultramarine color in paintings. You can see the result in Girl With A Pearl Earring, by Vermeer, The Starry Night, by Van Gogh, amongst many other paintings. It was favored by Michelangelo, and was often used as the vivid blue in paintings of the Virgin Mary.
Buddhists used Lapis to bring inner peace and freedom from negative thought. The stone is highly regarded as a stone of friendship and truth, encouraging harmony in relationships, revealing inner truth, and promoting self-awareness and the acceptance of knowledge. It is powerful for enhancing intellectual ability, both in helping during the learning process, and in enhancing memory.
Lapis is a great stone to wear, as it quickly releases stress, anger, and negative thoughts, and promotes peace and serenity.
The color of Lapis varies a lot, depending on the combination with other minerals, so you will usually see color variations in Lapis stones. It is not a hard stone, and should be isolated from other stones to prevent damage.
